Interaction between solute atoms and vacancies in Al-Mg-X (X=Si, Ge) alloys

Al-Mg-Ge alloys are considered to exhibit similar aging behavior as Al-Mg-Si alloys, therefore, they have been alternatively used analyze precipitates in alloys. However, the interactions between solute atoms and vacancies not clear. In this study, binding energies were investigated using first-principles calculations, similarities differences of biding energy each alloy analyzed. Comparing three-body energy, Mg-Ge-vacancy interaction Al matrix was stronger than Mg-Si-vacancy interaction. The difference bond strength could be explained by atomic radii against atom. change with different angles consistent for Si Ge cases. These results indicate that one reasons formation addition, strong suggest clustering occurs more rapidly resulting a rapid increase hardness at early stage precipitation.
